In todays class Competency Task 3 was discussed more. Margie showed us some library websites that use social media tabs/widgets. E.g. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Blogger, etc. It was briefly discussed about if there were guidelines for altering the standard tabs/widgets to use on the website, inrelation to the terms of use of them. I also asked Margie about the website tab/widget on Pinterest I discovered with let's say a Youtube video for instance, as I at first thought it was to upload it to a website. But this wasn't the case. Instead it takes you to the original website for where the video came from, for instance Youtube.

For Competency Task 3

Late Blog For Wednesday Class 23/10/2013!

In todays class we discussed with Margie what we have done for Competency Task 2 during our week off from class last week. I mentioned about the text limit for Twitter. Plus I also mentioned about a potential copyright problem when repinning something from Pinterest to Twitter, as a couple of the items I pinned had to have the text edited due to the text limit with Twitter. I also posted a picture in class to a blog entry from Pinterest, which I saved to the computer. I did try to embed the picture in the blog entry. But didn't work, which Margie is going to try and figure out why it wouldn't let me embed the image. I also after class did more pins for Pinterest. Plus either used the blog tab on Youtube or embedded some Youtube videos to my blog for an experiment. Plus some of the youtube videos have been posted to both Facebook and Twitter as well.

One is the two old hecklers talking about the internet. It may have been brief, but we touched on about appropriate behaviour on the internet in class. When I saw this clip I thought how true it is. I also posted some good Youtube clips on libraries to my blog, Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter. Plus a couple of miscellaneous videos as well from Youtube. Plus Competency Task 3 was very briefly discussed, as Margie will go into more detail about it next week.

Plus another thing I noticed with Youtube is that you can login to it with your google login, which we would be using for our gmail and Blogger accounts. Plus I also noticed with Pinterest there is a tab for sending the link to a website as well.

A Bit More For Competency Task 2!

Just a bit more on Competency Task 2, I decided to repost another entry from my class mate's Alyce's blog, as I liked her Avengcats to my blog,Facebook and Twitter. I also posted a couple more pins from Pinterest to my own Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter as well. Plus I used the blog, Facebook and Twitter tabs to post a video from Youtube of the Dodgey Brothers from Fast Forward played by Geoff Brookes and Steve Blackburn. I tried to post it to Pinterest and it didn't work, which I shall ask Margie tomorrow in class why it didn't work when I tried to post it to Pinterest.

Competency Task 2 - Related Library Organisation Who Uses Social Media!

Another task for Competency Task 2 is to talk about a related library organistaion that uses social media. I have chosen Victoria University. The web address is . I've noticed they have links to the fellowing:

*Facebook - If you click on the facebook link it takes you straight to the Facebook page, which you can like if you want and also invite people from your friends list to like the page as well. Now at the time I was logged into my facebook account. However if I click on the Facebook tab when I'm not logged into facebook. It will still take me to facebook, but I have to login to view the page better. It includes photos of the campues. Mentions events and has a bit of info I've noticed about courses, which are links that take you to the website.

*Twitter - If you click on the twitter link it takes you to the Twitter page. Again you can follow the Uni on Twitter if you wish. But like facebook to view the profile properly you have to logged into your twitter account. It does have photos and videos like the facebook page has. It does tweets as well, which I noticed there are links to Instantgram for instance. But as mentioned in a previous blog you would b limited on the amount you could write due to character limitations. But would guess it's roughly the same info as what I saw on facebook.

*Youtube - Is different from facebook and Youtube. You don't have to join Youtube to watch the video, but if you were to want to upload a video to youtube. You would definitely have to join Youtube. I found to be different as it showed activities V4U (Volunteer for you). Interviewed people and had filmed them involved in various activities. Would say it is aimed at sort of the same audience. But more those that don't like to read too much information maybe. It wasn't really about the library as such. But did find it very interesting. Noticed I could add it to Facebook, Twitter, gooogle and Instantgram. But there was no link to either blogger or pinterest.

*Linkedin - You seem to have the option to be a member or not to be a member. As I was able to read the information. This could also be due to the setting the University has chosen as well. Didn't seem to stop me from looking at the information at all. From the brief look I got I would say it's roughly the same amount of information as on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.

Competency Task 2 - Benefits and Negative Aspects!

Another task for Competency Task 2 is that we have to talk about both the benefits and negative aspects of organisations posting information across a number of different social media platforms.

BENEFITS

*Great way to communicate with other people to get them interested in their product or group or organisation. Probably the more you use the better.
*It's free, as there is no licencing fees to join the social media platforms.
*There is a help function if you get stuck.
*Each one has different functions that will suit different purposes.
*Privacy settings are there for people's or organistions profiles whether it be an individual profile or for a group.



NEGATIVES

*Like everything can be abused. E.g. hackers etc. But if necessary precautions are taken you should be fine.
*A lot of older people are wary of the social media platforms. E.g. Time, privacy or not how to use it and the horror stories.
*Some functions my not suit everyone. I've noticed with Twitter when you do tweet it sets a character limit. With facebook it isn't an issue.
*People sometimes can behave inappropriately on the social media platforms, which can put people off from using them. As the horror stories can be off putting for some. But what people forget you can block people or delete them or ban them from the group. It sadly is a vocal minority who spoil it for everyone else.

Late Blog For Wednesday Class 9/10/2013

In class today we did the embedding for Twitter that some of us had trouble doing in class for Competency Task 3. Luckily Alyce came to our rescue and showed Margie and everyone a different way of doing this. Well Done Alyce! Talked about what we have all learnt so far in class. Plus RSS feeds, Tiles and websites were touched on as well. Plus touched on what we have to do for Competency Task 3. We also have no class the next week, so that we can have time finishing off Competency Task 2.
